Adders

Three related activities designed to encourage reasoning about number, in the context of addition number bonds.

Each activity uses just one set of number cards. The cards must be placed in the boxes to complete an addition calculation.

Magic Crosses

A collection of three related activities designed to encourage reasoning about number, in the context of addition number bonds.

The cards must be placed in the grey boxes so that the cross has the same total across and down.

Magic Squares

This is designed to encourage reasoning about number, in the context of addition number bonds.

The cards must be placed in the grey boxes so the each row and each column of the square has the same total.

This 'magic total' is 15 with a 1 to 9 set of cards.

Children should attempt the Magic Crosses activities before moving on to this one.

Across and Down

This is designed to encourage reasoning about number, in the context of addition number bonds.

The cards must be placed in the grey boxes to make calculations across and down correct.

A recording sheet is included to encourage children to find as many solutions as possible.

A Big Sum

This challenging puzzle requires you to use all ten number cards to complete a big sum.

There are several solutions. one of which is given on the activity.

Cross Numbers

Cross Numbers are like crosswords but with mathematical clues.

Some clues are simply questions, others are puzzling.

Choose from several on addition and subtraction.

Steps

These activities involve children completing grid of squares with rules given for how numbers are related to each other.

The first few sets of Steps Activities are devoted to addition.
